Madrid is located in the geographical centre of Spain with an average altitude of 655m. The city covers an area of 605 km2 and has a population of 3.1 million (4.9 million including its suburbs).

The city enjoys a continental climate, with annual average temperatures of 11ºC (54F) in winter, 21ºC (74F) in spring, 31ºC (94F) in summer and 16ºC (64 F) in autumn. Even though sub-zero temperatures are frequent in winter, snowfalls are rare in the city.
During summer, temperatures can soar to 40ºC but don’t despair, it only tends to last a couple of weeks

Madrid is the political, economic, administrative and cultural capital of Spain. It is the seat of the highest institutions of the constitutional monarchy.
The royal family actually resides in the Zarzuela Palace at about 10km
from the city centre.
